A two-part drama based on William Boyd's novel about a woman who discovers her mother had a secret life as a British spy during World War II. In the 1970s, Ruth Gilmartin is shocked when her seemingly ordinary mother, Sally, reveals she is actually Eva Delectorskaya, a Russian who worked for British Intelligence. The story alternates between Ruth's present-day investigation and flashbacks to Eva's time as a spy, during which she was tasked with recruiting Americans to the war effort, but later came to believe she was betrayed by her own side and has been on the run ever since.
