In this episode Richard Parks heads for his homeland Wales to take part in The Brutal, an ultra-triathlon event set in the mountains of Snowdonia National Park. After over a year of preparation, this is his last super training mission before setting off on his record-breaking Antarctic expedition.
The Brutal is an ultra-triathlon event and Richard is joining an elite few competing in the hardcore Double Brutal. In his beloved Wales, this killer double Ironman distance is a race against the clock, beginning in Lake Padarn with a punishingly cold swim over 4.8 miles (7.7km). After four laps of the lake, the ultra athletes must get on to their road bikes to ride a lung-busting 232-mile (373km) cycle through the mountain roads of Snowdonia. The Double Brutal ultra-triathlon then culminates in a 51-mile (82km) run, broken into two sections. At daybreak, having survived nearly 24 hours of competing, Richard has to find the strength to run up and the down Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, before finishing with eight laps running around Lake Padarn.
